The Baby Cupboard: Burt's Bees Bum Cream

Burt’s Bees Baby Multipurpose Ointment, £8.99

I got this tip from my surrogate Rebecca. Take a tub of emollient barrier cream, like this Burt's Bees Baby Balm in your hospital bag, and put it on the baby's bum before they do their first black, sticky, tar poo. So I did, and when the midwife showed me how to do the first nappy I proffered the Burts Bees balm, and she looked at me, totally nonplussed. ‘It’s to stop the black poo sticking apparently’, I said.

Her eyes lit up; ‘Now that is something I’ve never heard of, but I’m now going to tell everyone to do it’.

And it worked, too. Slicked it all up the back, tops of thighs, thigh creases etc. When she pooed at 1 in the morning it was totally fine. Manageable, cleaned right off, the opposite of what everyone warned me about. Except Rebecca.

Now I keep using it because it’s so nice, and she still does sticky poos on occasion. Haven’t worked out the trigger yet, but I’ll be sure to share once I do
